How to celebrate your first Thanksgiving in the USA?

How to celebrate your first Thanksgiving in the USA?

Thanksgiving is arguably the most celebrated day in the United States and perhaps the most important dinner of the year. But for anyone studying or in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November it can be a completely foreign holiday. Here are the things you need to know before you sit down to dinner.

What are we celebrating?

Thanksgiving is a holiday that celebrates close family and friends and the autumn harvest. At the heart of this holiday is a deep sense of gratitude. As the name implies, it is a day for "giving thanks".

The history of Thanksgiving

In the absence of any historical consensus on the exact location or date of the first Thanksgiving meal on American soil, the celebration of the holiday is most often considered to have taken place in 1621, in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts.

The story goes that after the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock on 11 December 1620, the Pilgrims (British separatists) lost 46 of their 102 settlers. However, with the help of the Wampanoag Indians, they learned to farm their land and survive the cold of their first winter in the New World. The summer of 1621 produced a bountiful harvest. To celebrate the event, a traditional English (or more likely Native American) three-day harvest festival was held to commemorate this magnanimous event.

What's on the menu for Thanksgiving dinner?

Turkey

For most non-vegetarian families, turkey is a big part of the Thanksgiving feast. Whether roasted, smoked, brined or fried, achieving the perfect blend of crispy skin on the outside and tender meat on the inside is an art. ⇒ Recipe for making thanksgiving turkey

Stuffing

Before you even put the turkey in the oven, you'll need to stuff it with cornbread, onions, celery and dried cranberries. After a few hours of cooking inside the turkey, this sweet-tasting "stuffing" will become deliciously tender and juicy.

Cranberry sauce

Cranberry sauce, with its sweet and sour undertones, brings out the salty, juicy flavour of the turkey, much like an Indian condiment.

From gravy to gravy

Once you've removed the turkey from the oven, it's time for gravy. Made from the leftover gravy at the bottom of a pan, this thick turkey gravy can generously accompany almost any dish at Thanksgiving dinner.

Mashed potatoes

What other dish could go with this gravy? Topped with a juicy gravy, mashed potatoes are perhaps the most delicious (and hearty) dish on the Thanksgiving dinner menu.

Pumpkin pie

homemade pumpkin pie is the ultimate Thanksgiving dessert. However, after a second or even third plate of turkey and potatoes, it is perhaps the most difficult dish to finish. But don't panic! If you don't finish your share at dinner on Thursday, you can still enjoy it at breakfast the next morning.

How is Thanksgiving celebrated?

Now that you know a little more about the history of Thanksgiving, let's move forward a few centuries to look at modern Thanksgiving. Here's a Thanksgiving Day schedule:

  • 9:00 - 10:00 am  - Watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Watch it live on TV or find a spot on the street from which to watch the helium balloons, floats and bands march through the streets of New York.

  • 10 am - 12 pm - Shopping

For employees, Thanksgiving, like most holidays in the United States, is either a holiday or a half day of work. Luckily, supermarkets are usually open in the morning, so make sure you get there early enough to select all the ingredients you need to start cooking.

  • 12:00 - 13:00 - Watching the Presidential Turkey Grace

Yes, you read that right, since the middle of the 20th century, the President of the United States has made a practice of "pardoning" one or two Thanksgiving turkeys each year, allowing these birds to escape slaughter.

  • All Day - Watching American Football

Thanksgiving Day football games are an integral part of the American holiday. It's a great opportunity to cheer on your favourite team and take your mind off things, even though you'll most likely skip lunch. After all, you'll be feeling pretty hungry when it's time for dinner.

  • All day cooking, cooking and more cooking

Preparing the Thanksgiving meal can take hours or even days, depending on the complexity of the dishes and the number of guests. The turkey alone requires at least 20 minutes of cooking time per pound - the largest birds can spend up to five hours in the oven.

  • 18:00 - 22:00 - Eating beyond human limits

It's probably not surprising that an American holiday is all about eating, but it is legitimately surprising how much you can actually eat if you put your mind to it.

Cooking recipes - How to make thanksgiving turkey?

You must surely be wondering how you are going to cook the turkey you are going to serve to your guests for this Thanksgiving!

Indeed, the turkey is the true symbol of this celebration, consumed by Americans on this occasion for hundreds of years... But beware, making the perfect turkey for Thanksgiving is not an easy task, far from it! You'll have to be patient to get the congratulations of your friends and family for your turkey.

If you have ever celebrated Thanksgiving in the United States, you know that a good turkey must be tender and juicy, even if it weighs more than 8 kilos... A real challenge!

To achieve this feat, the bird must be prepared and waited for at least 12 hours, and then cooked for almost 4 hours! On this subject, make sure that your oven is big enough to accommodate the turkey before you buy it... It would be a shame to have to throw the turkey away because the oven is too small, or not be able to cook it properly, wouldn't it?

Ingredients:

  • A 8 kilo turkey
  • 115gr butter
  • 500gr salt
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 onion
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 2 sprigs of thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • White wine
  • Stuffing

Steps for making thanksgiving turkey:

  1. The night before you plan to cook your Thanksgiving meal, wash the turkey and gut it to remove the giblets.
  2. Then rub the turkey with salt before placing it in a container large enough to cover.
  3. Cover the turkey with water and season with pepper, thyme or rosemary to taste.
  4. Place the turkey in the refrigerator overnight.
  5. On the day of your meal preparation, remove the turkey from the container and wash it again before letting it dry out completely. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius.
  6. Once the turkey is dry, turn it over, breast side down, and place it in the oven dish.
  7. Melt about 60 grams of butter and brush the turkey with the melted butter, then stuff the turkey with the stuffing.
  8. Before putting the turkey in the oven, tie up its legs and fill the dish with all the vegetables cut into small pieces. If you want more flavour, you can add a glass of white wine to flavour the vegetables at this point.
  9. Put the turkey in the oven and bake until the inner temperature of the turkey reaches about 85 degrees Celsius.
  10. At about 2 hours 45 minutes, turn the turkey over, being careful not to break it open (which would be a disaster for your stuffing), and brush the breast with the remaining melted butter (about 60 grams).
  11. Depending on the weight of your turkey, it will take another 1 hour or 1.5 hours of cooking before you can remove the turkey from the oven.
Wait at least 30 minutes before carving.

Black Friday: The day for incredible discounts

Black Friday 2021, descuentos, ofertas, Amazon, discounts, offers, deals

The day after Thanksgiving in the US is called Black Friday. This Friday marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. It is highly anticipated, as it marks the start of major sales in most shops.

Where does the expression "Black Friday" come from?

This national institution was launched in the 1970s. There are two distinct explanations for the origin of the name of this fourth Friday in November.

  1. The first refers to accounting records. In those days, accounting was done by hand. Deficit entries were written in red, and profit entries in black. Throughout the year, the accounts were in deficit, except on the day after Thanksgiving. On that day, they were positive again.
  2. The second is attributed to the Philadelphia police. The streets of the city were filled with people and cars on that Friday. It was a human tide. You could say that the streets were crowded, hence the colour "black" in the expression.

A unique day of incredible sales

Americans are rushing to the shops from dawn until late at night. Why such a rush? Because the discounts are sometimes up to 85% off on items. In addition, these monster sales are sometimes only valid on that day.

The aim of this operation is to boost consumption at a time of year when the economy is a little sluggish. Consumers take advantage of good deals and substantial promotions. This regularly leads to riots.

This day is an integral part of contemporary American culture. It is an event to be discovered during a language trip or a holiday camp.

Amazon Black Friday: up to 40% off with the "Early Black Friday 2021"! The best offers

BLACK FRIDAY AMAZON 2021. Amazon has launched this Monday, November 8th the "Early Black Friday 2021", a series of promotions and benefits that will last until November 18th. Discover the best deals of this Black Friday 2021 from the online retail giant...

It's already started for Amazon!

The American online retail giant launched its "Black Friday before its time" this Monday 8 November ⇒ see the offers.

While the date of Black Friday is set for 26 November this year, Amazon is opening well in advance. Amazon's selection already includes discounts of up to 40% off. And the good deals are set to increase as we can expect, after Early Black Friday 2021, a "Black Friday Week" as every year from Monday 22 November.

What are the dates for Black Friday at Amazon?

In 2021, Black Friday should start at the latest on Monday 22 November, the Monday before the real Black Friday, as Amazon usually launches its "Black Friday Week". We can then expect the first promotions followed by a rise in value throughout the week and then a wave of monster discounts during the "real" Black Friday, on Friday 26 November. We can expect a peak in promotions on Black Friday, and an end to offers on the following Monday, which generally corresponds to Cyber Monday, a final day of deals and other discounted prices. In 2021, Cyber Monday should therefore take place on Monday 29 November and mark the end of this great week of discounts.

Thanksgiving in an American family, in the United States

What is thanksgiving for the Americans? Is Thanksgiving only an American tradition?

Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in some countries around the world, mainly in North America: Canada, the United States, but also in Liberia. It takes place on different dates in different countries. The most important celebration is the American version, as it is celebrated and expected by the whole population.

A historical origin

Thanksgiving dates back to the autumn of 1621, when it was decided to celebrate the first harvest in Plymouth. These harvests would ensure the future of the colony.

English dissenters had disembarked from the Mayflower the previous winter. These Pilgrim Fathers founded the colony of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The first winter was terrible. Scurvy, cold and hunger killed half of them.

In the spring, Indians from the Wampanoag tribe offered them food. They taught them how to fend for themselves and the art of fishing and hunting. They showed them how to grow and harvest corn. They showed them the virtues of certain plants and those to avoid. The pumpkin also played an important role during the winter.

Thus, during the first harvest in 1621, three days were dedicated to Thanksgiving. The Indians were invited to come and share a meal in gratitude for their help. Wild turkeys, unknown to the settlers at the time, were offered and eaten, as well as game.

For some, the origin to be considered dates back to 1623. In that year, a day of prayer and fasting was declared because of the drought. A few days later, rain fell and saved the crops. A day of thanksgiving was declared at the end of November.

Since then, several Thanksgiving Days have been declared. It was declared a national day in 1863 by Abraham Lincoln. The last Thursday in November was chosen as the date for this holiday. Franklin Delano Roosevelt changed the date to the fourth Thursday in November in 1939. It was not until 1941 that Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday.

Turkey, queen of the day

Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays of the year. Great parades take place on this day, especially in New York: the Macy's department stores', for example, organises a large 3-hour parade with customised floats and artists. On this day, all American families gather for a big traditional family meal at home. This big meal is also offered to American soldiers based abroad.

The turkey is the queen of the feast, and the main dish. It is stuffed with chestnuts, apples, oysters or sausages, for example. It is usually accompanied by mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes or a squash gratin. Green beans and corn are also on the menu. A cranberry sauce is added to the mix. The famous pumpkin pie closes the meal.

Since 1989, a more folkloric tradition has emerged: the President of the United States must pardon a turkey in front of journalists on the eve of Thanksgiving.

Departure for Christmas

This time of year is a time for giving and charity. Many meals are served to the homeless by both anonymous people and celebrities. Associations distribute millions of frozen turkeys to disadvantaged families.

Many masses and prayers punctuate this day. They are said to give thanks for the blessings received throughout the year.

The day after Thanksgiving is also a special day. This Friday, known as "The Black Friday", is the occasion of major sales in practically all shops. It marks the start of the Christmas shopping season.

This period is ideal for a language stay in an English-speaking country. It allows you to immerse yourself in the daily life of an American family, and to better understand the culture by participating in the most important holiday of the year.

It is also an opportunity to taste the specific cuisine of Thanksgiving.

Some anecdotes

Americans travel the most at this time, by plane or by car. Indeed, they come from all over the United States or elsewhere to be with their families. Friends are also welcome around the table. It is very important for them to be together on this day.

Many Americans eat turkey on this day. Thanksgiving is therefore also called "The Turkey Day".

Different regions have different side dishes. In the north-east of the country, maple syrup is used to coat the turkey. In Baltimore, sauerkraut is a must, in memory of its German origins. Cornbread with oysters comes from the south-east of the USA.

The same applies to desserts. Pecan pie replaces pumpkin pie in Georgia. Sweet potato pie is a staple on North Carolina tables.
